Masala Chai Oatmeal

This isn’t your average oatmeal. This isn’t that Anglocized Oprah Starbucks sugar bomb either. This is warm, spiced oatmeal. Masala means spice mix and masala chai is a spiced tea originating in India. Sometimes I steep a bag of black tea with the oatmeal, but that’s so extra and this tastes great without it. Make this oatmeal your own by adjusting the spices to a level you’re comfortable with. I use green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, cumin and black pepper. You can adjust the sweetner to suit your taste and any type works well. I especially like maple syrup for this. You can make the oats with water or plant milk. Just use this recipe as a guide to customize your breakfast into something uniquely yours.

2 cloves

2 green cardamom pods, split open and outer shell discarded

1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger

1/8 teaspoon of turmeric

1/8 teaspoon of black pepper

Pinch of cumin

Pinch of salt, optional

Dash of vanilla extract

1/2 cup of oats

1 cup of water or plant milk

1/2 teaspoon of sweetner of choice, add more for sweeter oats

Add all the ingredients to a pan and cook the oats according to the directions on the package. Let them sit for a few minutes so the flavors can mingle. Fish out the cloves. Garnish with slivered almonds and maple syrup if desired.
